MAKING OF A MAN

“When I look at you, and you look at me, I wonder what beautiful things you will be.”

dear Leonardo,

today is the Father’s day, and it makes me wonder – what kind of man you will grow up to be? it seems like I know every inch of your face so well, but it’s changing quickly in front of my eyes. sometimes I try to look through you features into the future, imagining how the roundness of your cheeks would chisel when you become a man. the comprehension of it takes my breath away. I feel the weight and honor of a great responsibility to fulfill – I am raising a Man. from the little baby boy you are (and always will be for me) to the grownup man to live your life as you please, do a job that you choose, be someone’s friend, lover, husband, father. I stop for a second to recover my breath and think what beautiful things I would want you to be.

I want you to be a free-spirit and an explorer, with great sensibility and open heart that is willing to accept its wrongs and has courage to change. someone who doesn’t live by anybody’s rules but creates his own. vulnerable, but strong and manly. I want you to be magnetic and give flowers to women you love. just like you father.

I want you to be a craftsman and perfectionist in what you do, handy with tools and not afraid to get your hands dirty. I wish you inherit an artist gene flowing in our family so generously, and later decide if you want to make a profession out of it or keep it as a hobby. I want you to be honest even when it’s easier to lie, and to be brave even when it’s wiser to backup. I hope you will value family and be kind and caring with the ones you love. just like your grandfather.

“I know you’ll be kind, and clever, and bold. And the bigger your heart the more it will hold.

Then you will discover all there is to see. And become anybody you would like to be.

And then I’ll look at you, and you’ll look at me, and I’ll love you whoever you’ve grownup to be.”

your mama,
always
