YOUR NAME

Leonardo Ambrosio. the sound flows so evenly and seems like the most natural combination of the two beautiful names – first and second -, both filled with aspiring and noble meaning. Leonardo in Portuguese stands for brave lion, while in Spanish the meaning of the name Ambrosio is “divine” (may be it comes from the association with “ambrosia”, the food of the Greek gods?)
but how did we end up with it? apart that “Ambrosio” was given, of course. being geographically & culturally saturated second name, it definitely set the tone to our quest. I always leaned towards the names with melodic vowels combinations, when you can almost lull it in a long and leisurely manner. your father was more focused on the numerology, but of course our calculations were all in vain without the date of your birthday, and we could only speculate on it.
after couple months of considering, trying and testing we came up with our three favorites:
– Ivan (your father’s first choice)
– Rocco ((its strength appealed to me)
– Leonardo
Ivan, being a traditional and a bit old-fashion Russian name I always loved, was, however, ruled out pretty quickly after I told your father that short version of it is “Vanya”, which to his spanish-trained ear sounded too similar to “banyo” (“bathroom”). in his turn, he convinced me that Rocco would not be an easy name for a boy as it bears a heavy meaning (literally, “rock”). Leonardo seemed like the option we both liked a lot, without any objections, our main inspiration being the famous Renaissance man whose biography I was reading at that time, as well as we both didn’t mind association with the handsome and charismatic DiCaprio. upon approval of both families, it was decided. so we just needed to wait and see if the date of your birthday would be in our favor.
since then it was pure math. both your father and I always liked numbers 1 and 5: 1 being the number of a charismatic leader, and 5 for an adventurous soul. your name in Pythagorean numerology calculates as number 5 so we just needed to get that number 1 added. my due date being may 8, 2015, was giving us number 8 as the total – not a bad number, but exactly what we hoped for. so to get that ambitious number 1 you needed to appear in the world on either May 1 or May 10. as May 1 passed by uneventfully, I focused all my energy on the 10th, which was also Mother’s Day that year. accustomed to speak to you while you were still inside my belly, I was asking you to come out then. surely enough, on May 9th I woke up with strong contractions, and 26 hours later my adventurous little leader, Leonardo Ambrosio, was born.
